Best Boulangeries in Nana’s Book

france paris Oct 02, 2023

Boulangeries are a French staple (where you even in Paris if you didn’t visit a boulangerie). It’s a classic that everyone needs to visit when in Paris. And the best thing? You will find a boulangerie every ten steps you take.

Now, here is every girl's Paris cheap eats secret (not really a secret, but let's pretend it is): you can do Paris on a budget by sticking to boulangeries. They offer the classic croissants and café crème for breakfast to pizza or a jambon beurre baguette for lunch or dinner - IT HAS EVERYTHING. They usually have a lunch special (or formule) where you can have a drink, food, and dessert for a set price, usually under 15 euros (depending on the area and boulangerie you visit)

As your registered croissant critique girl, I have literally tried to visit every boulangerie (quite literally impossible, but okay) in the hopes of finding my favorite croissant and boulangerie.

So now let me give you my top boulangeries and why they are just the quintessential Parisian perfection you need to visit.

Aux 2 Anges

Now, I know I might be biased on this one since it was my neighborhood boulangerie from last year, but I will say I haven’t seen any other boulangerie quite like this. Aux 2 Anges is located right behind the Bastille on rue Daval. It is a registered Boulanger de France*, which basically means that the boulangerie has met the highest critiques from some of France’s coveted pastry chefs and boulangers. It is indeed quite the praise and honor to be considered a Boulanger de France. They also won prizes for the Best Baguette in Paris a few years ago.… Need I continue?

Aux 2 Anges has been loved and praised by many; hence, it’s considered one of the best boulangeries on my list. As if I need to convince you more, they have some of the best croissants I’ve ever had. Whether you want to try a pain au chocolat (they have these spectacular almond Nutella croissants) or have some of their beautiful sandwiches, I highly recommend visiting Aux 2 Anges during your time in Paris.

Du Pain et Des Idées

Du Pain et Des Idées has been roaming social media for a while now. I first saw the boulangerie on one of TopJaw’s Paris recommendation videos and (since I trust TopJaw with anything) decided I must visit.

Now, Du Pain et Des Idées does have a much smaller selection of baked goods to choose from, and I would recommend visiting for breakfast or a sweet snack since they only sell bread and a few pastries. However, they are known for their snail-shaped pastries, either stuffed with pistachio or, my personal favorite, pralines that are oh-so-good. Their croissant is a top contender on my list of perfect croissants. You will always see a line outside of the bakery, but do not fear; it always moves fast!

Mamiche

Mamiche, similar to Du Pain et Des Idées, has a much smaller selection of baked goods, but what they have is insane. As always, I wouldn’t be recommending it if they didn’t have a solid croissant, and yes, yes, they do!

I first saw Mamiche while walking around looking for brunch around the 10th and stumbled upon the classic neighborhood boulangerie. I was shocked when I figured it was actually Mamiche, and they just didn’t have a sign outside (this has now changed). I first tried their babka (I adore cinnamon babkas) and instantly fell in love. They have windows on windows showing all their delicious creations that are mouth-watering. Everything from bread to croissants to viennoiserie is just insane. I highly recommend it.

Au Petit Versailles du Marais

Yet another winner of the best baguette in France, Au Petit Versailles offers that classic boulangerie feel with its beautiful ceilings and truly incredible patisserie. Like Aux 2 Anges, Au Petit Versailles provides everything you can imagine. They even offer an exquisite afternoon tea where I recommend you try their pistachio and raspberry macaron.

Au Petit Versailles is located in the middle of the 4th, right near the Seine and Place the Vosges in Le Marais. My best recommendation (you know what I’ll say…) is to grab your food and coffee and head to either the Seine or Place de Vosges for a classic Parisian picnic to enjoy some much-needed sun and lovely people-watching!

*If you are walking around Paris and spot a Boulanger de France, know that it will most probably be a good boulangerie to stop and get food, snacks, or desserts.*
