Long-Haul Flight Essentials

travel Oct 07, 2023

Long-haul flights are both exciting and tiring. After many years of traveling and trying to beat jet lag, I found that these items became life savers when traveling to make me feel better when I arrive at my destination.

Let’s start with tech. Quintessential for watching movies, reading, listening to music, and the most essential things in our lives, these are the few tech items I will always have on my carry-on:

  1. Portable Charger: These are the most essential items to pack. The last thing you want when traveling is not to have a way to charge your almost-dead phone and electronics. This one from Amazon is amazing and lasts for various charges.
  2. USB charger: I have my love/hate relationship with Apple and them changing their chargers every year. Sometimes, airplanes are blessed with charging ports, which is excellent; however, you never know what type of airplane you will fly in, so I always ensure to have a regular USB charger to ensure I can at least charge somewhere.
  3. Airpods: I have never been the biggest fan of over-the-ear headphones since they become quite uncomfortable when traveling and trying to sleep. That’s why I prefer my trusty airpods. Although I have had many scares when dropping one of these, I like them over headphones because of their comfort.
  4. Kindle or book: I used to be a physical book girlie, but after trying my best to save space in my carry-on, I decided to switch to a Kindle, and let me tell you, I love it. Not only does it hold so much space, but I love that I can purchase a book anytime. I highly recommend it for the avid traveler. However, having a book for me is essential in having some entertainment on the plane to make the hours pass quickly. This is my current read, which I love.

Now, let's move on to skincare. I always bring a clear toiletry bag like this one with all my skincare essentials. Here are a few things you will never catch me without:

  1. Cleanser: I love my Youth to the People cleanser, especially for my oily skin, to help me feel refreshed after a long flight. Beware, dry skin people, this may be too drying.
  2. Toothbrush and toothpaste: I must travel with this, and I will brush my teeth before landing to feel fresh.
  3. Hairbrush and dry shampoo: Again, oily-haired girls will understand the struggle of a long-haul flight, so I always have my Amika dry shampoo to feel clean after a long flight.
  4. Moisturizer: Despite my excessively oily skin, hydrating your skin is an absolutely essential in-flight routine. Airplanes are so drying that keeping your skin and yourself hydrated is imperative. My favorites are Caudalie Vinopure Oil Control, Algenist Niacinamide Skin Serum, and Cerave Ultralight PM moisturizer
  5. Sunscreen: You may have heard the dermatologist preaching about having sunscreen with you at all times during a flight since the altitude creates more sun exposure and, hence, more skin damage. So, always carry and have sunscreen on you. I have been loving this one from ISDN that is great for oily skin with a natural glow.

Finally, for some random bits that I must have:

  1. Water bottle: Apart from trying to consume less plastic, I always have a water bottle to ensure hydration. Planes are so drying, and this, in turn, makes you feel even worse. I always try to keep hydrated by refilling my bottle before entering the plane.
  2. Compression Socks: Apart from controlling swelling and uncomfortable feelings when sitting down for hours, compression socks are essential in preventing clots. As a medical condition girlie, I am always on the lookout to protect myself and ensure proper compression. This, combined with getting up a few times and walking around, provides a more painless flight and a more extensive prevention of clots.
  3. Comfortable layers: nothing is worse than feeling tight or extremely hot/cold in your outfit. That’s why I’ve perfected my travel day outfit with these amazing Amazon pants, this Everlane t-shirt, and my J-crew scarf to add warmth. With this, you will ensure a super comfortable flight.
