Travel to Aix-en-Provence with Nana

france Oct 02, 2023

If you have been keeping up with my latest Instagram stories, you may have seen that I recently made a short day trip to Aix. Although I was only there for a total of six hours, I had such a beautiful time walking around sunny Aix and exploring the old city. I, of course, had to eat some true Aix classics before leaving and wanted to share with you the research I did/ a list of the places I jotted down that I could not visit.

I first recommend spending a few days (around 2-3) in Aix. It is a beautiful city in south France that can easily connect you by train to Marseille and Nice. An ideal time to visit Aix is during the spring/summer when you can do a day trip to the iconic lavender fields in Provence.

My first reference point for Aix was the tourism office website, where you get the most famous and must-visit places in Aix. I also read Le Long Weekend and Bucketlist Bri’s blogs on Aix, where I found a more food-oriented guide to Aix.

Places I visited and highly recommend:

  1. FarinoMan – this is a bread-only place, and it’s by far one of the best baguettes I have tried in France. It's ideal for picking up some early morning and enjoying fresh toast with butter and jam. 5 Rue Mignet
  1. Les Madeleines de Christophe is one of the best Madeleines I have ever tasted. Although it has a constant long line, it moves quickly, and madeleines are produced every hour to guarantee a fresh batch when you order. They have only a few flavors available each day. I highly recommend trying the citron madeleine if you love lemons like me. 4 Rue Gaston de Saporta
  1. Weibel – a classic patisserie where you can enjoy a solid lunch and have exquisite pastries, Weibel is one of the original producers of calisson (a classic almond cookie from Provence). You can buy tiny calissons or try their pastries (their lemon cake was absolutely delicious…you can see a trend here). 2 Rue Chabrier
  1. Leonard Parli – one of the original, if not the original, calisson producers, Parli offers the best production of calissons in Aix. Their delicious cookies are incredible and worth a stop when visiting Aix. 15 Rue Gaston de Saporta

Places I researched that stood out to me but was not able to visit:

  1.   Maison Béchard
  2.   Le Vieux Tonneau
  3.   Roy René
  4.   La Chambre des Confitures
  5.   L’italien
  6.   Riederer
  7.   Philippe Segond
  8.   La Chocolarerie de Puyricard
  9.   Le Poirre d’Ane
  10. Le Bouche à Oreille
  11. Les Vielles Canailles
  12. La Cocina Negra

Must-see places:

You must visit Cezanne’s Atelier, just a 15-minute walk from the old city. It is a beautiful house surrounded by incredible views and a must-visit in Aix.

Markets are another must in Aix. Whether for food, spices, olives, or local products, you must visit every market in Aix. Some are in the old city and the Cours Mirabeau.
